Designated as the Official State Bird of Louisiana in 1966, the Brown Pelican has since become the symbol of all things Louisiana. Embossed on the State Flag, State Seals, and many other identifiers of Louisiana culture, this unique and cherished bird has garnered LA the nickname of "The Pelican State"
