Rouge Et Blanc, 2007
An original design and woodblock cut
By Candice Alexander-Lake Charles Artist

This original, hand-printed and hand-painted print, Rouge Et Blanc, was designed and executed in October 2007,
by Candice Alexander. The idea, based on a graphite drawing, was done in a somewhat surrealist style. The flowing vineyards and
fields of color consistently change in each print, making each print a one of a kind monoprint. Some of the prints even capture
the seasons changing. Located in the right top corner of each print, one will notice 3 people hanging by ropes via ancient wine
press. In the ancient world the wine press was a large basin where men would tread grapes. They would hold on to ropes above them
and stamp their feet. The juice would run into containers on the sides of the large basin.

"Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about,
and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: And when the time of
the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it."

The medium used is woodblock and the artist hand carved the block with a cutting tool. Each line (white area)
was carved out, and the raised surfaces were then rolled with a handmade ink made of vine ash, bone and oil. The block was printed
on an old-style manual printing press, The colors used are water color and the paper a France Rives BFK. The design was especially
made for the Rouge et Blanc event, Lake Charles, LA, November 3, 2007.
